Abstract
In this interview, Bishnupriya Dutt and Anuradha Kapur discuss their experience of the COVID pandemic in India, its consequences for Indian theatre makers, and the various responses to the pandemic. The interview covers a range of issues including the tradition of Left activist theatre as a form of social organisation in times of crisis; the different effects COVID had in the theatre cities of Kolkata and Delhi; the emergence of new forms of theatre and performance; the forms of social solidarity COVID inspired as well as the social tensions it inflamed, particularly in relation to gender-based violence, in India, which led to a powerful wave of women’s protests; and on how theatre responded to the immense internal reverse migration that COVID created – the largest internal displacement of people in India since partition.
