Abstract

This environmental case study documents the environmental impact, design strategies and touring approaches developed through New Beginning, a design-led performance by Variable Matter. Drawing on carbon data from the production’s creation and revival, the report examines sustainable approaches to scenography, materials, circularity, technical systems, costume and props, audience engagement, travel and international touring. It considers how modular design, local sourcing, reuse, local participation and knowledge transfer can reduce the environmental impact of touring performance, and concludes with practical recommendations and provocations for artists, producers, designers, venues and cultural organisations exploring more sustainable models of cultural production.
